Early Arrival!!!

Hello, hello everyone!

We apologize for the delayed post, Dawna and I were battling this last week to see who could get the most sleep during daytime hours. I think mom lost since she’s the feeding machine. Anyways, as most of you already know, Ashley arrived early into the world! I know many of you asked how this all came about, so here are some pics and details:

May 20th 2006/ 2:30 p.m. “The Call”
Michael gets a phone call while at work on a Saturday from Dawna. Dawna was out in Amador county on a limosine ride with her girlfriends as a bridesmaid for Stephanie’s bachelorette party. The girls were out in wine country enjoying the beautiful day when the Lord decided to pull on the ol’ pregnancy plug. Michael had to get in the car and drive for an hour to pick her up!

May 20th 2006/ 4:30ish p.m. Arrival at Mercy Hospital in Folsom.
Once we got back into El Dorado Hills we finally reached an area where our cell phones got reception, and we had a difficult time tracking down our Pediatrician. We were unable to tell if her water had broken completely, so we figured that it wouldn’t hurt to head over to Mercy Folsom to see if everything was okay. The nurse checked her out for a couple of minutes and then declared that it was officially “Go Time”! Her water had broken and she needed to deliver the baby within 24 hours.

May 21st 2006/ 2:00 a.m. Rude Awakening
After a couple of hours of good rest after the family checked out for the night, the contraction countdown began and woke Dawna up in the early hours of the morning. She had been on Pitocin (not sure of the spelling) to speed up her contractions since she was no longer retaining her water. We quickly called the Anesthesiologist to get her epidural shot. For the ladies out there wondering what labor contractions feel like, you’re better off not thinking about it until it happens!

May 21st 2006/ 3:30 a.m. Epidural Shot
Ahhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Relief for both parents and hospital staff. From this point on, the rest of the birth was a walk in the park!

May 21st 2006/ 6:17 a.m. First Breath
Ashley Barbara Callahan arrives! 6 lbs. 2 ounces, 18 inches long.
Mom’s reaction: “Yes, I’d love to hold her!”
Dad’s reaction: “Is it alive? I was unaware that my wife mated with a purple lizard?”

So, to sum it all up, there is no question that the birth of a child is the most amazing moment in a person’s life. Words cannot justify the experience. However, if I had to use words I guess I would include anticipation, nervousness, fear, exhaustion, hope, and finally exuberance. Thanks to all for the phone calls, cards, visits, and flowers. Your support gave us strength and comfort. God bless!
